Unemployment: Day 1 - Keeping Busy
Rob | October 31, 2008As mentioned in my previous post, I was laid off yesterday from Technicolor Digital Content Delivery.
I’m still coming to terms with this but have tried to keep busy. I’ve decided to chime in here and post a few things while I regroup and seek out new opportunities. As I do this, the nature of this blog will change a bit.
Day 1 of unemployment has been productive. Here are a few things I did:
- Visited my 7 yr old daughter 40 miles away to see her march in the Halloween parade at her school
- Applied for unemployment
- Spoke with a neighbor whom I learned was also very recently laid off
- Responded to friends and family members who heard the news and contacted me
- Cleaned my apartment (sort of)
- Finished my Halloween costume
- Laundry and a few other things…
My head still isn’t completely over what happened. I mean, yesterday, I was employed by a company with some people I have been working with for over eight years. By the end of the day, that was gone. After a brief meeting with my boss, I was signing a paper and relinquishing my laptop (goodbye trusty MacBook Pro!!!), phone, keys, etc…
I actually felt very appreciated, though. My boss told me he and other senior staff fought to keep me on board. Immediately following my departure, I received support from many on our team, our guys on the East Coast, the UK, a VP from another business unit and even from one of our partners.
I felt like they all came to my rescue. I was feelin’ the love! I’m fortunate to have worked with so many great people my last few months there.
I’m going to take a hiatus and evaluate my career direction.
Tonight is Halloween and I promised some friends I’d meet up with them at the Blank Club here in San Jose later tonight. Right now, I need to work out some aggression and hit the gym with some loud music! On my iPod Shuffle tonight:
